This hits a recurrent nerve for me:
The reason that so many Americans act as if government is the all-father, omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent, is because that is how the state presents itself to them, and it does so through innumerable venues, organs, and outlets.

Most people need faith – to a degree, I envy them. Most Americans believe in God and many of those who believe in God also believe in State . This is creepy to me, as I don’t believe in the former, and I don’t trust the latter. If a 1% truly exists, I’m in it.
I loathe people who put their faith in State, and I understand why people put their faith in God. That said, anyone who puts faith in anything to get them by that extends farther than their own two hands and their mind is creepy to me. Again – 1%.
If you haven’t yet, do read “The True Believer” by Eric Hoffer. I first read it nearly fifty years ago, and it explained much to me that I didn’t understand.
